Jordy Buck
I’m Jordan Buck, but you can call me Jordy. My family and I live in Ensley Center, Michigan. We own one single acre of land and on that started out as dead, unfertile soil. In the past 16 years, I’ve made that land into the most fertile soil in town. We primarily raise Asian Heritage Hogs, which are a landrace small breed from Vietnam. Besides the pigs, we keep a flock of 30 laying hens and 9 adult breeding rabbits. Those animals provide all the protein for our family, plus some to sell. We also have a 1/3 acre produce garden that serves to provide a little extra income as well as donating to hungry people in our community.
Growing up in the countryside, I spent my time hunting, fishing, trapping animals, and practicing bushcraft. After getting married, I transitioned more into homesteading. Even before that, my homesteading and self-reliance skills provided me with food when I didn’t have quite enough money.
I believe in family values, freedom, and self-reliance. You can do far more than you think, as long as you have the footing to begin. Our homestead provides food, peace, and security. I share what I know in my blog northernhomesteading.com and in Grow Your Life magazine, available from my blog. We have monthly classes on homesteading topics and offer consulting on homestead planning, livestock nutrition, and sustainable farming/homesteading practices.
Besides all that, I’m also a blackbelt in four martial arts as well as a certified instructor in Krav Maga and in a self-defense program.
My areas of expertise are: organic gardening, small livestock husbandry, livestock nutrition, sustainable ecosystems, food preservation, and self-defense.
